PCR Testing
PCR tests are typically administered by swabbing the back of the throat or deep within the nose. The PCR test is used to identify if the viral RNA for Covid-19 is present in the individual. A positive result indicates that the individual is actively infected with the virus and contagious to others. Individuals can have no symptoms and still be positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.
Rapid Antigen Testing
Antigen tests are commonly used in the diagnosis of respiratory pathogens such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19. Antigen tests are immunoassays that detect the presence of a specific viral antigen, which implies current viral infection. Antigen tests are authorized to be performed on nasopharyngeal or nasal swab specimens placed directly into the assay’s extraction buffer or reagent. These tests are less sensitive than PCR tests and the results can be returned in some cases as soon as 15 minutes.
Antibody Testing
This method of testing requires a blood sample. The results reveal markers of immune response including the IgM and IgG antibodies. A positive test indicates that an individual is immune to catching the virus and spreading it to other individuals. The duration of the immunity is still unknown, but studies speculate that immunity should last for at least 3-12 months. A negative test result indicates that an individual is still susceptible to catching the Covid-19 virus and that they have the ability to spread it to others. Antibody testing can be used after the vaccine to confirm that the treatment was effective. At this time we do not offer antibody testing but we will be able to offer this service in the near future.
